Rehabilitation medicine is a diverse specialty with the aim to facilitate the best possible recovery of function for patients with a full range of common and uncommon conditions.
The role of a rehabilitation physician in WA is highly varied, managing both younger and older adults who have impaired function due to debility or deconditioning. There is the opportunity to work across a wide breadth of subspecialties including acquired brain injury, neuro-rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, amputee, multi-trauma and general rehabilitation across various sites.
This work includes inpatients, rehabilitation in the home, outpatient clinics and community rehabilitation.
Responsibilities include conducting comprehensive assessments and implementing management plans across a variety of settings including inpatient, consults and clinics. Along with these responsibilities the rehabilitation physician collaborates closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team. They are also responsible for supervising and educating junior doctors and medical students.
A rehabilitation physician is someone who has a holistic patient centred approach and can lead, as well as work well within, a multidisciplinary team with collaboration in all areas. There is the opportunity to work across different sites in different roles depending on your interests.
